What shiatsu is
Finger pressure in the service of balance
Shiatsu is a Japanese word meaning literally “finger pressure” (shi, fingers; atsu, pressure). It is a manual technique that developed in Japan from anma, traditional Japanese massage, and from the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and was systematised as a discipline in its own right in the 20th century.
It is done on the floor, on a futon, with the person clothed and no oils. The practitioner applies sustained pressure with the thumbs, palms and sometimes elbows and knees, combined with gentle stretches and mobilisations. The pressure does not come from arm strength but from body weight, letting it drop with a straight back and the centre in the abdomen, the hara.
According to traditional oriental medicine, a vital energy, ki, flows through the body along channels or meridians linked to the different organs. Shiatsu works along these channels to find areas of excess or lack of energy and help the body regain its balance. That is why a session is not limited to the area that hurts: it works on the whole person.
Weight, not strength
Perpendicular, sustained pressure using body weight from the hara. The pressure is deep and the practitioner neither tires nor gets injured.
Technique
Channels and ki
You work on the meridians along which, according to oriental tradition, energy flows, looking for areas of excess or deficiency.
Philosophy
Clothed and on the floor
No oil, comfortable clothes, on a futon: this allows stretches and mobilisations that cannot be done on a massage table.
Format
Shiatsu is a traditional wellbeing and relaxation technique: it does not replace a medical diagnosis or treatment.
